Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin persea.
Etymology: < classical Latin persea an Egyptian tree with edible fruit < ancient Greek περσέα < Πέρσαι Persians (see Perse n.1), as the tree was thought to have come from Persia + -έα , suffix forming names of trees from names of fruits; in quot. 1601 at sense 1 via Middle French persea (1562 in the passage translated; 1553 as persee ; French persea , perséa ). In sense 2 after post-classical Latin Persea (C. de l'Écluse Rariorum plantarum historia (1601) I. 2; adopted as a specific epithet by Linnaeus ( Species Plantarum (1753) I. 370)).Compare Middle English persidis , in sense 1 (one isolated attestation; apparently < classical Latin Persidis, genitive singular of Persis, adjective, Persian):a1500 (?a1400) Stanzaic Life of Christ (Harl. 3909) (1926) 3328 In Ermopel, þat cite, was a tre of grete suetnysse, persidis callet was.
