Etymology: < medieval Latin tran(s)substāntiātio (in use in the 11th cent.), noun of action < tran(s)substāntiāre : see transubstantiate v. So French transsubstantiation (14th cent. in Godefroy Compl.). The Latin form occurs as a current term, c1070, in St. Peter Damian Expos. Canonis Missæ §7 ‘Quando profertur ipsum pronomen [‘Hoc’], nondum est transsubstantiatio’. (Migne Patrologia CXLV. 883.)
