Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French perron.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French, French perron (c1100 in Old French as perrun in sense 1, 1611 in sense 2; also in Anglo-Norman as peron , perroun ) < pierre stone (see pier n.2) + -on -oon suffix. Compare Old Occitan peiron (a1150; c1070 as pedrun), Catalan pedró (14th cent.; 1272–92 as peiró), Spanish pedrón (1414), Italian petrone (14th cent.).
