Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French phalanger.

Etymology: < French phalanger (G. Buffon Hist. nat. (1765) XIII. 92) < phalange bone of the finger or toe (1603 in this sense: see phalanx n.) + -er -er suffix², in reference to the toes of the hind feet.
