Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French phalanger.
Etymology: < French phalanger (G. Buffon Hist. nat. (1765) XIII. 92) < phalange bone of the finger or toe (1603 in this sense: see phalanx n.) + -er -er suffix2, in reference to the toes of the hind feet. Compare scientific Latin Phalanger, genus name (G. C. C. Storr Prodromvs Methodi Mammalivm (1780) 33).
1. Originally: any of various lemur-like Australasian marsupials of the family Phalangeridae, comprising cuscuses and some possums, usually nocturnal and arboreal, and having short, thick, woolly fur and prehensile tails; a phalangerid. Later also: spec. any member of the genus Phalanger, comprising the majority of the cuscuses; (in form Phalanger) the genus itself.Valid publication of the genus name: G. C. C. Storr Prodromvs Methodi Mammalivm (1780) 33.
