单词 per my et per tout
释义

per my et per toutadv.

Brit. /pəː ˌmiː eɪ pəː ˈtuː(t)/, U.S. /pər ˌmi eɪ pər ˈtu(t)/
Forms: 1600s–1700s per my & per tout, 1700s– per my et per tout.
Origin: A borrowing from Law French. Etymon: Law French per mie et per tout.
Etymology: < Law French per mie et per tout by joint tenancy, lit. ‘of nothing and of all’ (in Anglo-Norman as par my et par tout ) < per per prep. + mie , negative particle ( < mie crumb: see mye v.) + per per prep. + tout all ( < classical Latin tōtus : see toto- comb. form), after post-classical Latin totum tenet et nihil tenet he holds all and nothing (13th cent.).The phrase is often translated as ‘by half and by all’ due to misinterpretation of mie as a form of Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French mi (adjective) in the middle, (adverb) half, (noun) middle ( < classical Latin medius : see medium n.).
Law.
By joint tenancy; jointly and wholly (so that the whole property passes to the survivor of joint tenants, rather than falling into the deceased tenant's estate, as is the case with a tenancy in common). Also in extended use.
