Etymology: < German Pepsin (T. Schwann 1836, in Ann. der Physik u. Chem. 38 362) < ancient Greek πέψις digestion ( < πέσσειν (Attic πέττειν ) to cook, digest (see pepon n.) + -σις -sis suffix; compare Sanskrit pac- to cook) + German -in -in suffix¹. Biochemistry.

The chief digestive enzyme of the stomach, an endopeptidase which splits proteins into polypeptides able to be absorbed by the body, and which was formerly used medicinally to treat indigestion, etc.Pepsin is now regarded as a group of several related enzymes each designated by a letter, e.g. pepsin B.
