In early use: any of various skin diseases characterized by the presence of blisters. Later: spec. any of a small group of skin diseases, often also involving mucous membranes, in which acantholysis of autoimmune origin leads to severe, often life-threatening blistering. Also with distinguishing word indicating the type of pemphigus.The several types of autoimmune pemphigus, distinguished by clinical presentation and histological appearance, are commonly denoted by scientific Latin names, as pemphigus erythematosus, pemphigus foliaceus, pemphigus vegetans, pemphigus vulgaris.
