Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Pentose.
Etymology: < German Pentose (E. Fischer 1890, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 23 934) < ancient Greek πέντε five (see penta- comb. form) + German -ose -ose suffix2. Compare French pentose (1896). Compare heptose n. at hepta- comb. form 3, nonose n., octose n., etc.
Biochemistry.
A monosaccharide with five carbon atoms in its molecule (such as ribose and xylose).
