Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Netsilik.
Etymology: < the name of Netsilik Lake < Western Canadian Inuit natsilik Netsilik Lake (see note), lit. ‘one (provided) with seals’ < natsiq seal + -lik one (provided) with. Compare Netsilingmiut n. and adj.The word is not an ethnic designation in Inuit, but was popularized in this use by writings of the Fifth Thule Expedition of 1924. In forms without final -k perhaps < the contact pidgin, perhaps generalized < inflected and derived forms of the Western Canadian Inuit word in which -k was lacking or modified.
