Origin: A borrowing from Pidgin Algonquian.
Etymology: < Pidgin Algonquian of southern New England, attested as Narragansett nétop my friend (originally the male friend of a man); compare Massachusett neetomp . Compare also neechee n.
U.S. regional (chiefly New England). Now historical.
(a) A friend, a close companion. Frequently used in salutation to an American Indian by early colonists. (b) A name for: an American Indian. Cf. neechee n.
