Etymology: < post-classical Latin perculsion-, perculsio consternation, shock (5th cent.) < classical Latin perculs- , past participial stem of percellere to strike, overcome, strike with consternation ( < per- per- prefix + a second element < the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek κλᾳ̑ν to break (see clastic adj.), Early Irish clár plank (Irish clár ), Welsh clawr plank + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare earlier perculsive adj. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (pəɹkɒ·lʃən) /pəˈkʌlʃən/.
