单词 astrologian
释义

astrologiann.adj.

Brit. /ˌastrəˈləʊdʒ(ə)n/, /ˌastrəˈləʊdʒɪən/, U.S. /ˌæstrəˈloʊdʒ(ə)n/
Forms: Middle English astrologen, Middle English–1500s astrologien, Middle English–1500s astrologyen, 1500s– astrologian.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French astrologien.
Etymology: < Middle French astrologien, astrologyen (French (now hist.) astrologien ; the usual modern French word is astrologue astrologue n.) astrologer, also astronomer (c1330; in early use the precise meaning is often unclear) < astrologie astrology n. + -ien -ian suffix. In later use remodelled after words in -ian suffix (compare -logian comb. form). Compare earlier astrologer n., and also earlier astronomer n. and astronomien n., which show semantic overlap. With the use as adjective, which is not paralleled in modern French, compare Middle French astrologien (adjective) practising astrology (a1389), and astrologic adj., astrological adj. In early use, and apparently as late as the first half of the 17th cent. (compare quots. 1630 at sense A. 1, c1405 at sense A. 2), stressed on the second syllable.
