Etymology: < classical Latin astrologus observer or student of celestial objects, astronomer, person who predicts human affairs from a study of the celestial objects, astrologer < ancient Greek ἀστρολόγος astronomer, in Hellenistic Greek also astrologer < ἀστρο- astro- comb. form + -λογος -logue comb. form. Compare Middle French, French astrologue (1503; a1500 in Middle French as astreloc ; the usual term in Old French and earlier Middle French was astronomien astronomien n.), Old Occitan estreloge (c1330; also in an isolated attestation in 15th cent. as astrolog ), Catalan astròleg (14th cent. as astròlech ), Spanish astrólogo (second half of the 13th cent.; end of the 12th cent. as †astróligo , †estróligo ), Portuguese astrólogo (14th cent.), Italian astrologo (second half of the 13th cent.), and also German Astrologe (end of the 14th cent. as † astroloygen , plural). Compare earlier astrologer n., astrologian n., and also earlier astronomer n., astronomien n., which show semantic overlap.
