Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French pellage ; pell n.1, -age suffix.
Etymology: Either < Anglo-Norman pellage (see below), or independently < pell n.1 + -age suffix. Compare post-classical Latin pelliagium, perhaps ‘duty on hides’ (1370 in a Scottish source).1409–10 Rolls of Parl. III. 625/2 [Le] Subside & Custumes des Layns & Pealx lanutz, outre le Pondage, Tonage, Aunage, Pellage, & d'autres Marchaundises.
Obsolete.
A duty formerly levied on exported skins.
