Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pelice.
Etymology: < Middle French pelice, pellice, Middle French, French pelisse fur robe, fur-lined robe (c1150 in Old French; 18th cent. denoting a hussar's pelisse; end of the 18th cent. in sense 3a; 19th cent. in sense 3b) < post-classical Latin pellicia a coat or garment of skins or fur (a636 in Isidore), use as noun (short for pellicia tunica , pellicea tunica (Vetus Latina) or pellicia vestis (end of the 4th cent.)) of feminine of classical Latin pellīcius , pellīceus made of fur (see pelliceous adj.). Compare Old Occitan, Occitan pelissa (a1149), Catalan pellissa (14th cent.; 986 as pellicea ), Spanish pelliza (1283 as peliza ; 1207 in sobrepelliza ; 1161 as belîssiya in a Mozarabic text), Italian pelliccia (14th cent.; 12th cent. as pelixa denoting a pelt). Compare earlier pelisson n., pilch n.The specific use shown in sense 1 is apparently unparalleled in French or elsewhere.
