Etymology: < Middle French reformateur, French réformateur magistrate charged with reproaching officials who commit abuses of the law (1327; frequent in legal texts; compare quot. 1441), person who re-establishes or restores a country (a1482, with reference to Christ; the specific sense ‘leader of the Reformation’ is apparently not paralleled until later: c1622) and its etymon classical Latin reformātor person who moulds or reshapes, in post-classical Latin also person who restores or renews (from 8th cent. in British sources), person who amends, reformer (15th cent. in British sources; < reformāt- , past participial stem of reformāre reform v.1 + -or -or suffix. Compare Old Occitan reformador person who corrects or reforms something (13th cent.), magistrate charged with reproaching officials who commit abuses of the law (beginning of the 15th cent.), German Reformator reformer, (also specifically) leader of the Reformation (both second half of the 16th cent.).
