Etymology: < penta- comb. form + syllabic adj., after monosyllabic adj., disyllabic adj., trisyllabic adj., etc. Compare post-classical Latin pentasyllabus five-syllabled (4th cent.; < Hellenistic Greek πεντασύλλαβος), French pentasyllabe (1838; 1611 in Cotgrave as pendesyllabe), Italian pentasillabo (a1595), Spanish pentasílabo (1841–2; 1450 in an isolated attestation as pentasillabo).
Consisting of five syllables.
