Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin myco-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin and scientific Latin myco- (in e.g. Mycoderma Mycoderma n., mycologia : see mycology n.) < ancient Greek μύκης mushroom, fungus (see myceto- comb. form) + post-classical Latin and scientific Latin -o- -o- connective.Found in English formations (as mycologist n.) and in loans and adaptations < Latin (as mycology n., Mycoderma n.) from the early to mid 19th cent. Compare French myco- (formations in which are found from the early to mid 19th cent.), German myko- (formations in which are found from the mid to late 19th cent.).

mycodextrin n. [ < myco- comb. form + dextrin n., after German Mykodextrin (H. Ludwig 1869, in Arch. der Pharm. 189 33)] Chemistry Obsolete rare a substance analogous to dextrin found in the fungus Elaphomyces granulatus.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.

Biochemistry (originally) a sterol isolated from several species of fungus; (later) any sterol derived from a fungus or yeast.

1947 A. H. Warth Chem. of Technol. Waxes iii. 187 The sterols derived from yeast and fungi are termed mycosterols. An example of a mycosterol is zymosterol, C27H43(OH), found in yeast.
1996 Fitoterapia 67 344 The antiviral activity is thought to be mainly due to betulin, lupeol and mycosterols.
