Etymology: < scientific Latin Pentacrinus, genus name (L. Oken Lehrb. der Naturgeschichte (1815) iii. 108; < ancient Greek πεντα- penta- comb. form + κρίνον lily: see crinid n.) + -ite suffix¹. Compare scientific Latin Pentacrinites, genus name (J. F. Blumenbach Abbildungen naturhistorischer Gegenstände (1804) no. 70), French pentacrinite (dated 1775 and ascribed to Guettard in Robert Dict. alphabétique et analogique (1986)).

Palaeontology. Now rare.

A fossil crinoid of the genus Pentacrinus or family Pentacrinitidae, having a five-sided stalk and a calyx consisting of five plates, and known from remains of the Jurassic period.
