Etymology: Origin uncertain; probably < b- (in break n.1) + beat n.1 Compare slightly later breakdancing n. and also B-boy n.The term is sometimes attributed to the Jamaican-born U.S. disc jockey ‘Kool Herc’ (Clive Campbell, b. 1955): see B-boy n.

A sample of a drum break, esp. a funky or syncopated one, usually repeated to form a rhythm track; a breakbeat. Usually in plural except in attributive use.Now somewhat dated.
