Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Etymon: French panon.
Etymology: Apparently originally a misreading of Old French panon pennon n.The initial substitution of -u- for -n- probably resulted from minim confusion; in intervocalic position, -v- was often substituted for -u- by 19th-cent. editors of medieval manuscripts.

A pennon in the form of a right-angled triangle, esp. one attached to the tip of a lance or spear.
