Etymology: < post-classical Latin pediluvium (1690 in the passage translated in quot. 1693) < classical Latin pedi- pedi- comb. form + -luvium (in e.g. pelluvium basin for washing the feet: see note). Compare Portuguese pediluvio (17th cent.). Compare pedilavium n.Compare classical Latin pelluvium < ped- , pēs foot (see -ped comb. form) + luere to wash (probably < -luere in e.g. dīluere dilute v.) + -ium -y suffix⁴ (compare also malluvium basin for washing the hands). A form pediluvy is recorded in Webster's Amer. Dict. Eng. Lang. (1828).

Chiefly Medicine. Now rare (perhaps disused).

A footbath, esp. one containing a therapeutic preparation; a therapeutic preparation used for bathing the feet; a washing or bathing of the feet.
