Etymology: < scientific Latin Pauropoda, order name (J. Lubbock 1868 in Trans. Linn. Soc. Zool. 26 181) < ancient Greek παῦρος little, small ( < the same Indo-European base as few adj., pron., and n.) + scientific Latin -poda (see -pod comb. form), after scientific Latin Pauropus, genus name (J. Lubbock 1867, in Jrnl. Proc. Entomol. Soc. 1866 p. xxxiii; valid publication in same source as order name), so called in allusion to the relatively small number of legs.

A myriapod of the small class (formerly order) Pauropoda, resembling a minute, pale, soft-bodied centipede, with branched antennae, usually nine pairs of legs, and no eyes.Recorded earliest in attributive use.
