释义 | Peeliten.adj. Political History. A. n. A member of the group of Conservatives who supported Sir Robert Peel and his policies, esp. his measure for the repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846, and who later continued to espouse his political views, esp. in relation to free trade. Cf. protectionist n.Even after Peel's death in 1850 the Peelites formed a discrete group intermediate between the Tory protectionists and the Liberals; their leaders, notably William Gladstone, eventually joined the Liberal Party.
