hand-ruffn.2

Forms: see hand n. and ruff n.4; also 1600s hand-ruf.
Origin: Probably formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: hand n., ruff n.4
Etymology: Probably < hand n. + ruff n.4, after Middle French, French †ronfle (see ruff n.4).The semantic motivation of the first element is uncertain; compare:1980 M. Dummett Game of Tarot 183 By the time he [sc. Cotgrave] compiled his dictionary, the confusion between the two senses of ‘ruff’ [sc. ruff n.4 1a and ruff n.4 1b] had already set in: and his phrase ‘Hand-Ruffe’ [compare quot. 1611] may well have been intended to differentiate a game in which the ruff was the point on cards held in hand from one in which it consisted in the play of a trump card.
Obsolete. rare.
A card game; (probably) = ruff n.4 1a.
