Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements. Etymons: Latin pater , Greek πατήρ , -o- connective, -phobia comb. form.
Etymology: Irregularly < classical Latin pater (see pater n.2) or ancient Greek πατήρ father (see father n.) + -o- connective + -phobia comb. form. Compare papaphobia n.The expected form of the first element would be patro- < classical Latin patr- , stem of pater , or ancient Greek πατρ- , stem of πατήρ ; compare e.g. patrogony n., patrology n. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pætĕrofōa·biă) /pætərəʊˈfəʊbɪə/.
Obsolete.
Fear or mistrust of the early Christian Fathers.Apparently an isolated use.
