Etymology: < French bise, in same sense. Also found in medieval Latin, Provençal, Piedmontese bisa; Old High German bîsa, Middle High German bîse, modern German, Swiss bîse, beiswind, Breton biz. Origin unknown: Diez (s.v. Bigio) and Scheler incline to refer it to bis dark, blackish. In modern English only an alien French word.
