Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pastorel.
Etymology: < Middle French pastorel young shepherd (1119 in Old French as pasturel ; French pastoureau ) < pastor pastor n. + -el -el suffix2. Compare Italian pastorello (17th cent. or earlier; a1300 in the corresponding feminine form pastorella : see pastorella n.), Spanish †pastorello (1320 in an apparently isolated attestation).The word is attested earlier as a surname: Muriella Pasturel (1303), although it is unclear whether this is to be interpreted as reflecting the Middle English or the Anglo-Norman word.
Obsolete (poetic in later use).
