Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymons: Yiddish peyes, peye.
Etymology: < Yiddish peyes, plural of peye side-lock (in colloquial use also interpreted as a singular, with plural peyesn) < Hebrew pē'āh corner (plural pē'ōṯ: Leviticus 19:27, rendered in the King James Bible (1611) as ‘Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou marre the corners of thy beard’; perhaps symbolic of the corners of the fields that, according to other parts of the Law, were to be left ungleaned to ensure nourishment to the widows, orphans, and strangers). In α. forms after the colloquial Yiddish plural form peyesn; in γ. forms directly after the Hebrew plural form pē'ōṯ.
Usually with plural agreement. Long locks of hair hanging down in front of the ears, worn by Hasidic and Orthodox Yemenite male Jews.
