Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian partigiano.
Etymology: < Italian partigiano (1942 in this sense: see partisan n.2).Italian partigiano apparently chiefly meant ‘adherent of a party, esp. a fanatic’ in the early 20th cent.; the sense ‘guerrilla fighter’ was reintroduced under the influence of Serbian partizan and Russian partizan (compare note at partisan n.2).

A member of the Italian resistance during the Second World War (1939–45); an Italian partisan.The resistance movement, comprising several disparate political and partisan groups, was principally active in northern and central Italy after April 1943, when several of the parties involved signed an agreement to work together to overthrow fascism.
