parillinn.

Brit. /pəˈrɪlɪn/, U.S. /pəˈrɪlᵻn/

β. 1800s parallina (irregular), 1800s parilline, 1800s– parillin.

Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian pariglina.
Etymology: < Italian pariglina (G. Pallotta 1824, in Giornale di fisica, chimica, storia naturale, medicina, ed arti 7 386) < -parigli- (in salsapariglia sarsaparilla n.) + -ina -ine suffix5. Compare French parigline (1824).The forms with -ll- (see β. forms) are apparently after sarsaparilla n., although compare also German Parillin (1825). There is an apparently isolated attestation of parilla in T. Thomson Chem. Org. Bodies (1838) ii. i. 279. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pări·lyin) /pəˈrɪljɪn/ for the variant pariglin.
