单词 majorate
释义

majoraten.

Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: major n.2, -ate suffix1.
Etymology: < major n.2 + -ate suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin majoratus (11th cent. (frequently from 13th cent. in British sources) in this sense). Compare earlier majorship n., majority n.2 N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (mēi·dʒəreit) /ˈmeɪdʒəreɪt/. French majorat, cited in N.E.D. (1904) s.v., appears to be attested in French dictionaries only from early 20th cent. and only in the restricted sense ‘title of an infirmière-major (senior nursing officer)’.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
