Etymology: < Majorca, the name of the largest of the Balearic Islands, in the western Mediterranean (Spanish Mallorca ; late 16th cent. in English in form Maiorque ; ultimately < post-classical Latin Maiorica (5th cent.) < classical Latin maior major adj. + -ica (as in Armorica : see Armorican adj.)) + -an suffix. The 17th-cent. quots. appear to preserve the suffix of Spanish Mallorquin Mallorquin n. and adj. Compare French majorquin, majorcain (as noun and adjective, late 19th cent.).
