Etymology: < Urdu pargana, of uncertain origin. Compare Portuguese parganá, praganá, praganã (1554 as praguana).Not found in Persian other than in works written in South Asia. The form pragaṇa recorded in dictionaries (and perhaps underlying quot. 1614 and Portuguese praguana) appears to represent Sanskritization of the word rather than an earlier form.

In India: an administrative district, comprising a number of villages; a subdivision of a zilla.
