Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French fossage (1389 or earlier) < fosse fosse n.¹ + -age -age suffix. Compare post-classical Latin fossagium (from 12th cent. in British and continental sources). Compare earlier murage n., pontage n., etc.Bailey's definition, cited by N.E.D. (1897), appears to be a misinterpretation arising from the fact that fossage is chiefly referred to in the context of exemption:1721 N. Bailey Universal Etymol. Eng. Dict.
