Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Paspalum.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Paspalum (Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 10, 1759) II. 855) < Hellenistic Greek πάσπαλος a kind of millet, of unknown origin. Compare French paspale (1868 in Littré).
A large genus of tropical and subtropical (esp. South American) grasses which have unilateral racemes bearing adpressed spikelets and which include important species grown in their own area and elsewhere as fodder or cereal plants; (also paspalum) grass, or a grass, of this genus (also paspalum grass).
