Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin acaulis , -ine suffix1.
Etymology: < scientific Latin acaulis stemless (1745 in Linnaeus, or earlier; spec. use of post-classical Latin acaulis (1610 or earlier) < a- a- prefix6 + classical Latin caulis stem: see caul n.2) + -ine suffix1. Compare earlier acaulose adj., acaulous adj., and acaulescent adj. Compare French acaule (1789).
