Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Perhaps also partly a borrowing from Dutch. Etymons: French râpé; Dutch rapé.
Etymology: Apparently < French râpé (although this is apparently rare and first attested later: 1759), use as noun of the past participle of râper rasp v.1, perhaps partly via Dutch rapé (although this is also first attested later: 1755; apparently < French).
Now chiefly historical.
A coarse snuff made from dark strong-smelling tobacco leaves, and originally obtained by rasping a piece of tobacco.
