Origin: A borrowing from Scottish Gaelic. Etymon: Scottish Gaelic bealach.
Etymology: < Scottish Gaelic bealach (Early Irish belach gap, pass, narrow passage), of unknown origin.Attested earlier in place names, such as the Ballach (1504, unidentified), the Ballo, Fife (1571; 14th cent. in a Latin context as terris de Bellachis, now Ballo).
