Origin: A borrowing from Sinhala. Etymon: Sinhala pansala.
Etymology: < Sinhala pansala < Pali paṇṇasālā ascetic's hut < Sanskrit parṇaśālā forest shelter < parṇa leaf (see paan n.) + śālā dwelling (see sala n.3).
In Sri Lanka: the dwelling or hermitage of a Buddhist monk; the living-quarters of a Buddhist monastery. Also: the monastery itself; that part of a Buddhist temple complex that is for the monks.
