单词 parnel
释义

parneln.

Brit. /ˈpɑːnl/, U.S. /ˈpɑrn(ə)l/
Forms: Middle English peornel, Middle English pernele, Middle English pernelle, Middle English peronel, Middle English peronelle, Middle English peronyll, Middle English pirnel, Middle English purnel, Middle English purnele, Middle English pyronell, Middle English–1500s pernell, Middle English–1600s pernel, Middle English–1700s 1900s– parnel, 1500s peronall, 1500s–1600s parnell, 1600s pannell, 1700s– panel (English regional (Lincolnshire and Norfolk)), 1800s pamel (English regional (Norfolk)).
Origin: From proper names. Etymon: proper name Pernel.
Etymology: < Pernel, Parnel, female forename (originally a shortened form of Petronilla, and popular as a feminine equivalent to Peter). N.E.D. (1904) and Middle Eng. Dict. both give an etymology from French, but no corresponding use is recorded in Old French or Middle French, and use of French péronelle in the sense ‘silly and talkative young woman’ is not recorded until 1651, itself probably arising from a popular song of the 15th cent. beginning ‘Av'ous point veu la Perronnelle que les gendarmes ont emmenée?’ (compare Middle French peronnelle air to which one dances (1564 in Rabelais), French chanter la péronelle to talk nonsense (1640)), although the title of the song may result from earlier use as the conventional name of a cantankerous wife.
Now rare.
1. A prostitute; a loose woman; (also) †a priest's mistress (obsolete). Also in extended use: a weak or effeminate man. In later use archaic or regional. In Middle English in Piers Plowman and Mum & Sothsegger also figurative as a name. In quot. a1616 with a pun on panel.
