Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Greek παραμήκης, Latin -ium.
Etymology: < ancient Greek παραμήκης oblong, oval ( < παρα- para- prefix1 + μῆκος length (see meco- comb. form): with the formation compare classical Latin oblongus oblong adj.) + post-classical Latin -ium: see -y suffix4. Compare scientific Latin Paramecium, genus name (valid publication 1773, in form Paramaecium: see note below).
Zoology.
A protozoan of the genus Paramecium (class Oligohymenophora, phylum Ciliophora), comprising typically freshwater ciliates with a characteristic oblong or slipper shape; (in form Paramecium) the genus itself. Cf. slipper animalcule n. at slipper n. Compounds 2.Valid publication of the genus name (as Paramæcium): O. F. Müller Vermium Terrestrium et Fluviatilium (1773) I. i. 54.
