Etymology: Originally < scientific Latin Acarus acarus n. + -ine suffix1; subsequently < scientific Latin Acarina, class name ( C. L. Nitzsch in J. S. Ersch & J. G. Gruber Allgemeine Encyclopädie der Wissenschaften und Künste (1818) I. 246/2) < Acarus + -ina -ine suffix1. Compare French acarin (1834 or earlier as adjective and noun; < Latin). With the use as noun compare acaridan n.
