Origin: A borrowing from German, combined with an English element. Etymons: German Parabansäure , -ic suffix.

Etymology: < paraban- (in German Parabansäure parabanic acid (F. Wöhler & J. Liebig 1838, in Ann. der Pharm. 26 285)) + -ic suffix.The term German Parabansäure was introduced without any explanation of its formation, but as Wöhler and Liebig had made parabanic acid by a reaction in which they expected to obtain alloxan (which they also named), it is probably that para- was used in the sense ‘instead of’, ‘opposed to’ (compare para- prefix¹ 3a), the ending being that of allox-an , -anic (see alloxan n.), and the b merely euphonic. It has also been suggested that the b is a residue of carb-, and that the term was formed to express parallelism of constitution to urea or carbamide, CO(NH₂)₂, and to alloxan, (CO)₄(NH)₂; however, it was not until the 1850s that the identity of urea and carbamide was realized.
