单词 -fuge
释义

-fugecomb. form

Primary stress is retained by a syllable in the preceding element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Etymology: < modern Latin -fugus. According to classical Latin analogy, this ending should be connected with fugĕre to flee (compare profugus), and should have the sense ‘fleeing from’ (compare lucifugus, erifuga). In the medical words febrifugus, lit. driving away fevers, vermifugus expelling worms, however, the ending derives its sense from Latin fugāre, to put to flight.
Forming adjectives and nouns. In imitation of the anglicized forms of the loans from Latin, nonce-words in -fuge have occasionally been formed; chiefly on Latin stems, as demonifuge n., dolorifuge, something to drive away pain; but occasionally on English words, as mendacity-fuge.
