Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Paragrammatismus.
Etymology: < German Paragrammatismus (K. Kleist 1914, in Münchener med. Wochenschrift 6 Jan. 11/2) < para- para- prefix1 + ancient Greek γραμματ- , γράμμα letter (see grammar n.) + German -ismus -ism suffix. Compare Byzantine Greek παραγραμματισμός substitution of one letter for another, post-classical Latin paragramma copyist's error (5th cent.). Compare earlier agrammatism n.
Medicine.
Incorrect use of grammatical or syntactical elements in certain forms of aphasia and other speech disorders; an instance of this.
