Etymology: (? < French astragale ), < Latin astragalus, < Greek ἀστράγαλος a huckle-bone (in plural dice), a moulding in the capital of a column, a leguminous plant. See also astragalus n.
1. Physiology. The ball of the ankle-joint; the huckle-bone; = astragalus n. 1. Hence in plural (as in Greek): Dice, which were originally huckle-bones.
