In form panaris probably after Middle French, French panaris (1575; c1370 as panarice; also 1580 as pannarice). Compare also Catalan †panaríç (now panadís), Italian †panarico, †panarizo (1491), †panereccio (1536), patereccio (1483), Spanish panarizo (a1335; now regional), panadizo (1545).
