Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the first syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. tonico-stimulant Brit. /ˌtɒnᵻkə(ʊ)ˈstɪmjᵿlənt/, U.S. /ˌtɑnəkoʊˈstɪmjələnt/.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin tonico-.
Etymology: < scientific Latin tonico- (in e.g. tonico-balsamicus ) < ancient Greek τονικός tonic adj.; compare -o- connective.With tonico-balsamic compare scientific Latin tonico-balsamicus (1823 or earlier); with tonico-stimulant compare scientific Latin tonico-stimulans (1803 or earlier).
combining form from Greek τονικός tonic adj. and n., used to form compounds in sense ‘combining a tonic and (some other) quality’: see quot. 1840.

1840 J. Pereira Elements Materia Medica II. 1189 In its remote effects myrrh partakes of both the tonic and stimulant characters, and hence some have denominated it a tonico-stimulant; and as its stimulant powers are analogous to those of the balsams, it has also been called a tonico-balsamic.
