Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek παπυρο-.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek παπυρο-, combining form (in e.g. παπυροειδής like papyrus) of ancient Greek πάπυρος papyrus n.Formations within English are found from the late 17th cent. (papyropolist n., papyrophobia n.), but become more frequent from the mid 19th cent. (e.g. papyrography n.). The form usually combines with second elements ultimately of Greek or Latin origin. Formations in French and German are rare.
Forming nouns with the sense ‘of or relating to paper or papyrus’.
